left Tokyo Narita airport thursday at 21h55 for 14 hours flight to Paris Charle de Gaulle. Once again, I really enjoyed my time in Tokyo, but everything went so fast. I wish I could stay a bit longer...
Regarding the conference itself, it has been even better than last year. Pacsec/core05 is definitly one of the best conferences around. These are the 5 talks I liked the most.
- Using neural networks for remote OS identification : thoses two guys from Core SDI have a clever approach of OS fingerprinting that seems efficient and reliable
- Attacking the IPv6 protocol suite : van Hauser from The Hacker's Choice (THC) exposed an impressive job in pointing out implementation vulnerabilities around IPv6
- Unix kernel auditing : Ilja gave a very comprehensive approach of kernel land vulnerabilities along with some of his MacOS kernel discoveries
- Packet forgery with Scapy : as Maximilian finally couldn't come to Tokyo, Philippe took his place and had another brilliant talk about his Scapy packet generator with some exciting new features
- MD5 to be considered harmful, today : Gera gave a very interesting presentation about MD5 collisions implications
I must admit had a hard time committing my slides Japanese translation into LaTeX Beamer (had to miss first talk, sorry Andrea) and still have some corrections to add. Arigato Gozaimasu to everyone who helped me in this, especially japanese people (as I don't speak a word of japanese). Having my slides in Japanese is definitly k3wl :) In addition, the Linksys WRT54GS I brought for my demo wouldn't boot properly. Thanks to Philippe and hostap, I could fix everything at the last minute (talk minus 5 minutes) and everything went fine.
We had some sightseeing around Tokyo. I will recommand Meiji and Asakusa shrines, Tsukiji fish market (we found a very good Sushi restaurant there), Shibuya crossing area, Akihabara district (also known as Otakunomachi, litterally geek's place), and that really surprising Ninja restaurant near Akasaka-Mitsuke subway station. Don't miss Ueno park and its zoo, and give a see at Roppongi district and its Eiffel Tower lookalike Tokyo Tower. Outside Tokyo, Kamakura, Nikko and Hakone are very nice places. Kyoto is also known to be wonderful, but, again, we didn't have the time to go there. Maybe next year...
By the way, my pictures are now online.
